GBA+ Capacity

During 2019–20, the Deputy Commissioner, Corporate Services, Strategic Planning and Transformation Services, assumed the role of champion for GBA+, with support from the head of the Human Resources team at the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC). Since then, the champion has become actively involved in cross-government activities focused on GBA+, gathering best practices that will inform improvements the OIC makes to GBA+-related information and human resources practices.

Compliance with access to information obligations

The OIC investigates complaints with no regard for who submits them. The OIC collected administrative data on all its investigations, to ensure it can respond quickly and effectively to delays in completing investigations and serving all complainants.

Through its investigations, the OIC helped Canadians gain access to information related to issues such as Residential schools, discrimination and harassment. With more information at their disposal, thanks to the OIC’s intervention, citizens were also better able to track how the government is applying GBA+ principles to its initiatives, policies and decisions.

As it hired new staff, the OIC continued to work to ensure its workforce reflects the diversity of Canadian society, and meets government employment equity targets, with the ultimate goal of closing any gaps in representation.
